Mets aim to resume Shea dominance of Rockies

Baseball Betting Lines

04/24/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Seemingly firing on all cylinders, the New York Mets aim to continue their hot play this evening, when they host the middle portion of their three-game series with the Colorado Rockies at Shea Stadium.

The Mets continued to get stellar pitching in Monday's series opener and saw their power slugger get back on track as they downed the Rockies, 6-1.

John Maine (3-0) got the win, allowing one run on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings. The right-hander, who has yet to lose in four starts this season, also struck out five and walked two, lowering his ERA from 1.93 to 1.71.

Jose Valentin homered and drove in four runs, while Carlos Delgado also had a home run, just his first of the season. Moises Alou went 3-for-3 and contributed a pair of doubles for the Mets, who have won five of their last seven games and moved into first place in the NL East with the victory.

The victory also improved the Mets to 14-1 against the Rockies at home dating back to the 2003 season. Overall, New York has won 10 of its last 12 against Colorado.

Right-hander Orlando Hernandez will try to follow Maine's strong start tonight. The Mets veteran improved to 2-1 on the season while lowering his ERA to 3.24 last time out, when he was charged with just two runs (one earned) on three hits with a season-high 10 strikeouts over seven frames last Thursday against Florida.

It was a good sight to see for the Mets, as Hernandez was roughed up for six runs in a loss to Washington the start before.

Hernandez is 3-1 with a 4.15 ERA in four career starts against the Rockies. He has struck out 28 Colorado hitters over 21 2/3 frames.

Aaron Cook counters for Colorado and has yet to post a victory this season, going 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA through four starts. He posted no decisions in his first three outings before taking a loss on Thursday against Los Angeles. Cook was tagged for five runs -- three earned -- on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts in six innings against the Dodgers.

He turned in a solid outing in his last career appearance against the Mets. That came on October 2, 2005, when Cook pitched a complete game in an 11-3 victory.

The right-hander has made four appearances against the Mets in his career, two of those starts, and is 1-0 with a solid 3.50 ERA and the complete game.

Matt Holliday went 3-for-4 and drove in the lone run Monday for the Rockies, who have lost four of five. Todd Helton added two hits for Colorado, which has lost 11 of 16 games since starting the season 3-1.

Colorado also failed to homer for the sixth straight game, matching a franchise mark set twice during the 2002 season.

Colorado starter Taylor Buchholz (1-1) suffered the loss. The right-hander was making his first start of the season after four relief appearances and was charged with four runs on five hits in five innings. He struck out three and walked two.
